Missions Projects

Here at Holmes Street we take the fourth element of our mission statement very literally: "GO out to serve persons in need".  If you would like to get involved with any of these missions, please contact the church office.

Current Projects

Dinner Church

Every Thursday evening, we work alongside a team from First Baptist Church to provide a dinner and teaching time for the residents of the Butler Terrace public housing community.  Those who serve in this ministry get so much out of getting to know the children and adults who come, and sharing a meal and the love of Chirst with them.  If you would like to help as a cook, table host, or by sharing a brief Jesus story teaching, please contact the church office.

Meals-on-Wheels:

On the second Tuesday of every month, more than 20 HSUMC volunteers dedicate their afternoon to delivering hot meals to the elderly and homebound as part of the Meals-on-Wheels program.  HSUMC volunteers have been doing this for 30 years.  We are looking for new volunteers to continue serving this vital community program. Volunteers will be assigned a route (HSUMC is responsible for 14 routes) and will pick up meals and route information at the Senior Center by 11 a.m. on delivery day. Most routes take approximately 2 hours to complete.  Contact the church office if you would like to volunteer.

HSUMC Food Pantry:

Working in conjunction with the community help line, Holmes Street has been providing food to those in need for more than 29 years. Our food pantry is associated with FoodLine of Madison County.  FoodLine makes the referrals to us from those making request to a nearby pantry for emergency food supplies. Holmes Street is pleased to help serve this important local mission.  Clients receive grocery bags filled with canned goods, fruits, cereal, bread and other foods to help them in a time of emergency need. We are blessed to have dedicated church members to buy groceries, stock shelves with purchased and donated goods, donate time, food and money to this important mission. We are also grateful for generous donations from other churches that help to fill our pantry shelves.

First Stop - Breakfast for the Homeless:

Once a month Holmes Street provides breakfast at First Stop, a 501(c)(3) corporation established in 2001 to reduce the number of homeless persons in Huntsville/Madison County, Alabama communities.  We typically provide this meal on the 4th Friday of the month.  To find out more or to volunteer, please call the church office.

Box Tops for Education:

Holmes Street members clip Box Tops for Education coupons to assist our local schools.

Limestone Correctional Inmate Ministry:

Several  times during each year Holmes Street collects various hygiene and other needed items for inmates at the Limestone Correctional Facility.

Costa Rica Mission Trips:

We took our fourth trip to San Isidro, Costa Rica in 2017 to work with the Costa Rica Mission Projects (CRMP) organization.   This was our second time to stay in the CRMP facility we helped construct during our trips in 2014 an 2015.  CRMP works with local Methodist churches in the San Isidro area.  We helped to build a new fellowship hall building for a church down in the southwestern part of Costa Rica.   We hope to make a return trip in 2019 to work with the CRMP folks.  You can find out more about Costa Rica Mission Projects here.
